Former Anderson standout Abby Child joined the Trojan coaching staff in August 2017.
Child, a native of LaGrange, GA, is a former member of the Anderson University softball program (2010-2014). During her time at AU she helped lead the Trojans to their first regular season conference championship, tournament championship and NCAA appearance. The Black and Gold enjoyed their highest national ranking (12th).
“We are very fortunate to have Abby back as an assistant coach”, noted head coach Tommy Hewitt. “She not only brings her softball knowledge and experience to our program, but she returns to the legacy she worked so hard to help create.”
Child was voted MVP and was a team captain three of her four years donning the Black and Gold. Child garnered multiple awards which included All-SAC Player of the Year, All-SAC, All-Region and Tournament MVP.
Upon graduation, Child held the SAC and Anderson career record for home runs (47), RBI, runs scored, walks, on base percentage and slugging percentage. She also led the nation in walks being walked over 30% of her at bats. To cap off her career, Child was named Anderson’s 2014 Female Athlete of the Year.
Child was hired as the head softball coach at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, S.C. Child led the Rams to the 2015 region championship.
Following her brief successful stint at Hillcrest, she received an offer to be an assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern University. Child followed this opportunity to Americus, Ga. where she earned her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education.
“It has always been a dream to come back and coach at AU”, said Child. “It has always felt like home and I look forward to being on the other side of the fence to continue to help this program grow. It is really exciting to be back.”
