Salisbury, N.C.- Anderson University softball drilled three homeruns and three doubles to knock out the fourth-seeded Wolves from Newberry winning 10-6 to advance to the semifinal round of the single elimination South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Saturday morning at Whitley Field.
With the victory, Anderson moves to 29-20 overall and will face top-seeded Lincoln Memorial on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 10 am.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Anderson jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two and a half innings of play before the Wolves took a 3-2 lead after four complete innings. Both teams scored three-runs apiece in the fifth inning with Anderson exploding for five runs in the top half of the sixth. The Trojans were able to shut out Newberry over the final six outs to win the game, 10-6.
Seniors Joshlyn Martin and Breanna Hagerty and freshman Kayson Boatner led the charge by collecting seven of the 10 Trojan hits. Martin batted 3-for-4, including a homerun while crossing the plate four times. Boatner went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored while Hagerty hit a single and a grand slam, racking up five RBI on the day. Senior Kasey Grant also hit a solo shot on a 1-for-4 outing.
Sophomore Kayla Pepper got the nod, pitching 4.1 innings before being lifted in favor of sophomore Harlie Duncan (16-8). Duncan pitched the final 2.2 innings picking up her 16th win of the season. The right-handed hurler gave up no hits while striking out two.
Anderson and Lincoln Memorial split its late season match-up with the Trojans winning game two, 4-1. The rubber match will begin at 10 am Sunday morning for a spot in the SAC Tournament Title game.
