BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Anderson men's golf team trimmed five strokes off its score from Monday's opening round, but was unable to gain ground and finished the two-day King Invitational in seventh place.
The event was hosted by the Tornados at the par 70, 6,474 yard, Country Club of Bristol.
North Greenville overcame a two-stroke deficit to win the tournament by four shots over Southern Wesleyan, while Erskine finished third after leading the tourney following Monday's first round. King and Belmont Abbey finished in a tie for fourth. Anderson finished eight strokes behind sixth-place King (B) and trailed Belmont Abbey and the host Tornados by a dozen shots, while outdistancing Catawba by two strokes. Pfeiffer finished ninth, with Virginia-Wise rounding out the 10-team field.
North Greenville's Evan Gfeller (68-65=133) held off a second-round charge by King's Alex Summers to claim individual medalist honors by two shots. Summers carded an opening-round 73 on Monday, but blistered the course with a second-round 62 to vault from an eight-way tie for 17th into the runner-up spot.
Sophomore Jake Miller (73-71=144) paced the Trojans for the second straight day and finished in a four-way tie for 15th, while classmate Brady Cox (75-71=146) slashed four strokes off his opening-round score and finished in a tie for 22nd. Junior Grayson Bell carded a two-day 147 and shared 28th, with freshman Cal Brock matching his season-low score (74) for the second straight round and wrapped up the tourney in a tie for 32nd. Senior Forrest Fowler carded identical 75s and finished in a tie for 36th.
The Trojans are slated to return to the links Monday for the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.
