Michael Whitling enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Anderson women’s basketball team after joining the staff prior to the 2010-11 campaign.
Whitling assists in preparing practice and game plans and oversees the Trojan conditioning program. In addition, he works with the guards and is responsible for film exchange and preparing scouting reports on opponents. Whitling also assists in recruiting for the Trojans.
A native of Knox, Pa., Whitling spent four years (2005-08) as a graduate assistant coach with the Clarion University women’s basketball program, assisting in on-court coaching, game management and the preparation of scouting reports. He also helped recruit quality Division II athletes to the Golden Eagle program and developed and implemented preseason workout plans that included weightlifting and individual player development.
Whiltling also managed the oversight of student-athlete academic performance and players’ class schedules.
Prior to joing the Trojan coaching staff, Whitling served as the boy’s basketball head junior varsity coach for Du Bois Area High School, where he managed the junior varsity team on a daily basis and developed the varsity and junior varsity post players.
Whitling was a three-year letterwinner on the Clarion baseball team, earning second team All-PSAC West utility honors and wrapped up his collegiate baseball career ranked 5th in school history in batting average for a season (.357).
“Mike came up through the same ranks as I did under my mentor, coach Gie Parsons at Clarion,” added Brunelli. “That experience gave him exactly what I need in an assistant.”
Whitling earned his B.S. degree in finance in 2004 from Clarion University (Pa.) and received his M.Ed. in 2008. He is single and resides in Anderson.
