ANDERSON, S.C. – Women’s tennis freshman Rebecca Bruning and baseball sophomore first baseman Steven Cooper have been selected to the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard for their outstanding performances in the month of March.

Bruning, who is in her first season of collegiate tennis, posted a perfect 5-0 record in singles for the month, while going 4-1 in doubles. Bruning opened the month with a 6-4, 6-0 wins over Mars Hill’s Lucy McLauren after teaming up with junior Lindsay Gregory and defeated Anna Rickenbaker and Jade Henke at the No. 2 doubles position.

Later, Bruning cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Converse’s Kelsey Rembert following another doubles win as the Trojans blanked their in-state rival Valkyries, 9-0. On March 20, Bruning grabbed two more wins as the freshman paired up with Gregory once again to defeat Brevard’s tandem of Claudia Hellman and Nirvanna Silva, 8-1. In singles against BC, the freshman knocked off Jule Herman 6-1, 7-5.

After suffering her first doubles setback against GRU Augusta, Bruning responded in the singles round as she grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Gisela Font. Bruning wrapped up the month with 6-1, 6-2 win over Lincoln Memorial’s Priscilla Bulandres prior to her fourth doubles victory of the month over Roksolana Prudyvus and Alexandra Granger.

For her efforts last week, Bruning was named to her first South Atlantic Conference honor, being picked for the conference’s Player of the Week honor, sharing the title with Queens’ Christina Rutscheff. On the year, Bruning is 11-1 in singles with a 7-5 mark in doubles action.

Cooper, who started all 17 games in the month of March, recorded a team-high .435 batting average (27-for-62) while tallying at least one hit in 15 of the 17 games played. In the span, Cooper notched 10 multi-hit games, highlighted by a 4-for-5 performance against Wingate where he pounded a home run and a double while driving in five runs and scoring twice.

Also for the month, Cooper posted a .527 on-base percentage with a .774 slugging percentage, while scoring 21 times and driving in 21 runs. The Williamston, S.C. native blasted five home runs, four doubles and a key triple in a 5-2 win over Southern Wesleyan at Greenville’s Fluor Field.

Currently, Cooper ranks fifth in the country and is the only player in the league with more than 100 total bases with 102 for the year. His .369 average ranks fourth in the SAC, while his 43 RBI this year ranks first.

Each month, one male and one female student-athlete or teams are honored as the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard Performers of the Month for his or her performance in competition, in the classroom, or in the community.
