GREENWOOD, S.C. – Newcomer Tomas Passalacqua posted a straight set win at No. 3 singles, but it was only win Anderson University men’s tennis managed, as the Trojans fell to nationally ranked Lander 8-1 Monday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Passalacqua, who is now 2-1 on the season, grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Samuel Poutignat at the No. 3 position and has now captured two straight victories. In doubles action, the sophomore, who was teamed up with classmate Inaki Iriberry, was unable to keep up with Lander’s duo of Poutignat and Niklas Terhorst, falling 8-2.
The freshmen team of Mateo Rivas and Juan Carracedo each went 0-2 on the night, stumbling in doubles action to Adam Jonsson and Oscar Axelsson at the No. 1 position. At No. 2, Lander’s Vincent Verpeaux, who was named Preseason All-Peach Belt Conference, and Paulo Fernandes defeated Paul Michael Calhoun and Danilo Faria, 8-3.
The Trojans suffered five setbacks in singles action as the Bearcats, who were ranked No. 7 nationally, improve to 3-1 on the young season. With the loss, AU drops to 1-2.
Anderson returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes USC Aiken to the Upstate. First serve from Max Grubbs Memorial Courts is set for 2 p.m.
