ANDERSON, S.C. – After Anderson University wrestling took an 11-6 lead with a forfeit and a technical fall, the Trojans were unable put any more points on the scoreboard, falling 47-11 to UNC Pembroke Thursday evening at the Abney Athletic Center.
With the win, the Braves reclaim the coveted “Battle for the Belt” award and take it back to the Tar Heel State for the eighth straight season and 21st time in the all-time series.
Redshirt senior Cory Monteforte earned the first points for Anderson on the night after he was awarded a forfeit at 125. With the victory, Monteforte, who was celebrating his senior night, is now 9-12 for the season.
Sophomore Zak Hale continued the winning trend at 133, as the Shaftsbury, Vt. native cruised to a 15-0 technical fall at the 5:05 mark. For Hale, the five points was his first technical fall of the season as he improves to 17-4.
UNCP controlled the remainder of the dual, claiming wins in every remaining weight class and earning its eighth straight dual victory and 10th overall.
“I was extremely disappointed with the effort tonight,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “I expect the guys to come out and wrestle on a high level, especially on Senior Night. We put in too much work during the week not to come out and execute at a high level. There is not much time left in hourglass of the season and so the guys must wrestle with a desperate sense of urgency. The regional tournament is approaching quickly and there will be no excuses for not wrestling well.”
The Trojans will step away from their dual schedule on Saturday when they head back to Newberry for the Newberry Open. Up to six Trojans will look to capture wins in the annual one-day tournament.
