ANDERSON, S.C. –After completing 20 straight duals on the road this season, Anderson University wrestling opens a two-dual homestand, beginning with Coker Thursday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
AU enters the midweek dual coming off a winless afternoon against the region’s best at the Super Region 2 Duals on Saturday at Newberry’s Eleazer Arena. The Trojans suffered setbacks to Findlay (41-6), Shippensburg (33-12), Tiffin (30-19) and nationally ranked Indianapolis (37-15) to close the day.
The lone bright spot for the Trojans was sophomore Zak Hale, who went 3-1 on the day, but snapped a streak of 15 consecutive wins with a sudden victory loss to Justin Kieffer of UIndy. Overall, Hale is 15-4 on the season and was ranked No. 4 in the latest Basford Rankings released last Thursday.
Redshirt senior Cory Monteforte (125), junior Keenan Simmons (133), graduate student Zane Newton (157) and senior Eric DeAngelis (184) each added two wins on Saturday, headlined by Newton’s 12th and 13th victories on the season. For the year, Newton is 13-7 and has won two of his last three bouts.
Coker captured two victories at the Super Region 2 Duals on Saturday, picking up wins over Tiffin (34-15) and Shippensburg (18-17), but falling to Findlay (24-21) and Indianapolis (32-12). For the year, Coker enters Thursday with an 8-6 record in its first season as an NCAA program.
Junior Charlie Huff headlined the Cobra lineup with four straight wins at 133, which including a first period pin over Tiffin’s Adam Green in his opening bout. For the season, Huff is 19-9 with two pins on the year.
Adding three victories on the day was heavyweight Austin Akins. Akins dropped his opening bout to Tiffin’s Garrett Grey, but bounced back with three straight wins, including a first period pin over Findlay’s Luke Fleming. Akins enters Thursday as Coker’s lone 20-bout winner with a 20-14 record.
The 2013-14 campaign is Coker wrestling’s inaugural season as Thursday will mark the first ever meeting between Anderson and the Cobras.
