ROCK HILL, S.C. – Anderson University outside hitter Shannon Gillespie has been named the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Gillespie helped lead the Trojans to three league victories on the week, as Anderson moved into a share of third place in the conference. The 5-foot-10 junior recorded 56 kills (4.67 k/s) and 42 digs (3.5 d/s) on the week after recording her sixth straight double-double and 10th of the season in AU’s four-set road win at Catawba on Saturday. She tallied a match-high 22 kills and added 18 digs versus the Indians, while recording 17 kills and 13 digs at Queens on Friday. Gillespie again led all players with 17 kills in the mid-week sweep past Newberry, while adding 11 digs.
The native of Fishers, Ind. leads the SAC by averaging 3.95 kills per set on the season and the all-around performer is also 10th in the conference in digs (200) and 14th in digs per set (3.39 d/s).
“Shannon had a great week leading her team,” said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. “We are honored that she has received this recognition.”
The accolade marks the second time in three weeks that an AU player has won the award, as teammate Hailey Pittman notched the honor on Sept. 23.
Anderson plays host to Coker on Friday at the Abney Athletic Center. AU defeated the Cobras 3-1 in mid-September, with Gillespie notching a match-high 18 kills. First-serve versus the Cobras is slated for 7 p.m.
