Russell, Young Led AU To Victory In OT

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Nayte Russell scored 24 points and Brandon Young scored 22 to lead Anderson University to an 85-81 victory over Queens University of Charlotte in a Conference Carolinas game Friday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 12-15 and 10-10, trailed 44-38 at the half. But the Trojans fought back to take the lead with 13:16 remaining. Anderson led by nine twice and by four -- 75-71 -- with 1:06 remaining. But four free throws by Andre Lockhart, the final two after time had expired, tied the game at 75 and sent it to overtime. The game was tied two more times in the overtime period, the final time at 79, before Anderson took control. Field goals by Jarret Johnson and Russell gave Anderson an 83-79 lead with 38 seconds remaining. After John Thompson scored a basket for the Royals, Young canned two free throws with 10 seconds remaining for the final margin. Russell, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., playing in his final home game was 7-for-13 from the field, 4-for-6 from behind the arc, and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Young, the leading candidate for Freshman of the Year honors in Conference Carolinas, was 9-for-16 from the field and also had six rebounds and three assists. Queens, 19-8 and 14-6, was led by Thompson with 18 points and Lockhart with 15 points. Queens was 16-for-16 from the free throw line in the first half and finished the game 30-for-37 from the line. Anderson scored 28 points in the paint to just 12 for Queens. Led by Thompson's 11 rebounds, Queens won the boards, 37-33. Andersons shot 58 percent in the second half to finish the game at 52 percent. Queens shot just 41 percent in the second half to finish the game at 40 percent. The Royals were just 1-for-9 from the field in the overtime period. Anderson, the No. 6 seed, will travel to No. 3 Queens Monday for the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
