Trojans Get Second Road Victory Of The Week

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Anderson University evened its Conference Carolinas record at 3-3 with a 79-71 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian Saturday afternoon. “To win on the road, you have to rebound and make your free throws,” said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. “We out-rebounded them and we made some late free throws to seal it.” Anderson, 5-8 overall, took control of the game midway through the second half when a 3-point basket by Nayte Russell gave the Trojans a 51-48 lead the lead for good. The Trojans had to hold off a late Knight rally to hang on to the victory, their second straight league victory on the road. St. Andrews used an 8-2 run to cut the Anderson lead to 61-59. But a 3-point basket by Brandon Young stopped the Knight rally and increased Anderson’s lead to 64-59. After a basket by St. Andrews, Kris Fudzinkas scored five straight points on a three-point play and a putback to increase the Trojans’ lead to 69-61. “Nayte’s three and Brandon’s three both were huge baskets,” Taylor said. “Kris had some huge rebounds and a couple of big finishes late.” Fudzinkas made two free throws to increase Anderson’s lead to 71-66. Three free throws and a 3-point goal by Young and three free throws by Russell in the final minute helped seal the victory for AU. Russell led Anderson with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Young added 14 points and Jarret Johnson scored 11. Johnson also had a team-high five assists. St. Andrews was led by Bradley Hippolyte with 17 points and Coby Poe with 16 points. Anderson shot 52 percent from the field, 54 percent in the second half. St. Andrews shot 39 percent from the field. The Trojans won the boards, 37-35. Fudzinkas and Stephen Cobb both had nine rebounds apiece to lead Anderson. Anderson was 9-for-19 from behind the arc, while St. Andrews was just 5-for-26. Anderson built a 10-point lead in the first half, but St. Andrews used a late run to cut the AU halftime lead to 36-33. The loss drops St. Andrews to 2-11, 1-5.
