Belmont Abbey Eliminates Anderson From Tournament

BELMONT, N.C. – Belmont Abbey snapped a tie at 24 late in the first half with a 9-2 run and went on to post a 76-66 victory over Anderson University in the first round of the men’s CVAC Tournament Monday night at the Wheeler Center. Belmont Abbey, 13-14 overall, advances to play at third-seeded Pfeiffer in Wednesday’s second round. The loss ends Anderson’s season at 6-21. Belmont Abbey used its decisive run to take a 33-26 lead at the half. Anderson pulled within five points early in the second half, but the Trojans would get no closer in the final 18 minutes. Belmont Abbey’s largest lead was 16 – 58-42 -- with 9:46 remaining. Belmont Abbey was led by Damien Humphrey with a game-high 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Fard Morales and Sidney Hoff chipped in 12 points apiece for the Crusaders. O’Tey Sellers was Anderson’s leading scorer with 15 points. John LeSueur and J.R. Howell added 13 points apiece for the Trojans. The Crusaders were dominant in three categories – bench scoring, rebounding, and second-chance points. Belmont Abbey’s bench outscored the Anderson bench, 33-10, and the Crusaders doubled the Trojans on the boards, 44-22. The Crusaders used their advantage on the boards to outscore the Trojans in the second-chance points category, 17-2. Anderson also was hurt by poor free throw shooting. The Trojans made just 8 of 17 from the line. Anderson shot 50 percent from the field to Belmont Abbey’s 46 percent.
