Trojans Beat St. Andrews On Senior Day

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University placed four players in double figures and put together a 15-3 run late in the second half to beat St. Andrews Presbyterian College 86-71 in a men’s CVAC game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. Anderson, 6-18 overall and 4-14 in the CVAC, led 34-25 at the half and 50-37 with 14:26 to play. But St. Andrews went on a 13-2 run led by Richard Stone to tie the game at 52 with 9:40 to play. Stone scored 12 of the 13 points during the run, including seven free throws. After two more ties, the Trojans went on a 15-3 run to take control of the game. Ronald Bowers led the Anderson run with nine points, including a 3-point goal that gave the Trojans the lead for good at the 7:03 mark. Anderson’s largest lead was 18 – 83-65 – with 34 seconds remaining. Anderson’s final basket was scored by senior Nolan Gottlieb, the only player in college basketball who has cystic fibrosis. With four seconds remaining, Gottlieb, who got his first career start in his final home game, drained a 3-point basket from the right wing. Anderson was led by J.R. Howell and Tariq Naqqash with 18 points apiece, Bowers, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., with 17; and O’Tey Sellers with 14. Howell was 4-for-7 from behind the arc. Stone was St. Andrews’ leading scorer with 17. He was followed by Chad Eichelberger with 11 and Joseph Gripper with 10. Anderson shot 64 percent in the second half (16-25) to finish the game at 50 percent. St. Andrews shot 39 percent from the field. St. Andrews, 12-12 and 9-9, won the boards, 41-30.
