Lees-McRae Uses Second-Half Run To Beat Anderson, 80-73February 3, 2006
BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Lees-McRae College used a 16-6 run in the middle of the second half to take control of the game and went on to post a 80-73 victory over Anderson University in a CVAC men's game Thursday night. The Bobcats, 6-14 overall and 4-9 in the CVAC, trailed 50-49 with 11:34 to play, but Henry Williams led a 16-6 run with eight points to give Lees-McRae a 65-56 lead with 8:04 to play. Williams and Aaron Dugger were the leading scorers for the Bobcats with 21 points apiece. Dugger also had a game-high nine rebounds. DJ Menifee and James Barbee added 10 points apiece for L-M. Anderson was led by O'Tey Sellers with 18 points, and J.R. Howell and Tariq Naqqash with 13 points apiece. In the final six minutes, the Trojans, 4-15 and 2-11, got within three points four times and two points once. Trailing 73-70 with 35 seconds remaining, Anderson had a shot to tie, but Sellers missed from behind the arc. After Williams made two free throws with 31 seconds remaining, Sellers made three free throws with 21 seconds to play to cut the Bobcat lead to 75-73. But a single free throw by Williams and a putback by Lansen Leach after Williams missed the second free throw gave L-M a 78-73 lead with 18 seconds left. Anderson shot 44 percent from the field while limiting Lees-McRae to just 37 percent. But the Bobcats were 26 of 33 from the free throw line and dominated the boards, 48-34.
