Barton Dominates Second Half To Beat Anderson, 96-80January 28, 2006
ANDERSON, S.C. – Barton College opened the second half with a 37-18 and went on to post a 96-80 victory over Anderson University in a CVAC men’s game Saturday night at the Abney Center. Barton, 14-1 overall and 11-0 in the CVAC, trailed 45-43 at the half, but the visiting Bulldogs turned up the tempo in the second half and took control of the game. Barton, ranked No. 1 in the East Region, was led by Anthony Atkinson with 31 points, Alejo Barovero with 20 points, Casey Moore with 14, and Bobby Buffaloe with 12. The Bulldogs shot 65 percent in the second half and outscored the Trojans 53-35 in the second 20 minutes. Anderson, 4-13 and 2-9, placed five players in double figures. O’Tey Sellers led the Trojans with 19 points. He was followed by Tariq Naqqash with 14, Alfred Boykin with 13, Nathan Russell with 12, and Ronald Bowers with 10. Using a 17-6 run, the Trojans seized a 27-18 lead with 8:39 remaining in the first half. But seven points by Barovero in the final 53 seconds cut the Anderson lead to two points at the break. After a tie at 51 with 16:11 remaining, Barton took the lead for good with a 7-0 burst that featured putbacks by Mark Friscoe and Bobby McNeil and a 3-point basket by Atkinson. Atkinson, a junior from Wilson, N.C., was 12-for-18 from the field and 6-for-11 from behind the arc. There were just 17 turnovers in the game – 10 by Barton and seven by Anderson. Barton averaged 1.37 points per possession and shot 53 percent from the field for the game. The Bulldogs also dominated the boards, 44-30. Barovero was the game’s leading rebounder with 12.
