Limestone Slips Past Anderson, 68-62January 23, 2006
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Terrell Smith scored 18 points and Sumner Benton scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Limestone College to a 68-62 CVAC victory over Anderson University Monday night at the Timken Center. Limestone improves to 7-10 overall and 5-5 in the CVAC, while Anderson falls to 4-11, 2-7. Following Smith and Benton for the Saints were Alex Bailey with 12 points and Marquis Bell and Marquintus Jones with 10 apiece. Shawn Poppie had nine assists for the Saints. Anderson was led by Tariq Naqqash with 24 points and O’Tey Sellers added 17 more for the Trojans. In the first half, both teams shot 48 percent from the field. Benton had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the Saints to a 34-30 halftime lead. Naqqash scored 10 of his points in the first half. Second-chance points were a major factor. Limestone finished the game with 16 second-chance points, while Anderson had just six. Anderson trailed 61-48 with 6:05 remaining but a 12-3 run by the Trojans cut the Saint lead to 64-60 with 41 seconds to play. Limestone made four free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the victory. Both teams shot 48 percent from the field for the game, scored 18 points from behind the arc, and suffered just nine turnovers each. Limestone won the boards, 36-29.
