Anderson Upsets Pfeiffer, 92-89January 21, 2006
ANDERSON, S.C. – Alfred Boykin and O’Tey Sellers scored 20 points apiece and Anderson University shot 60 percent from the field to upset Pfeiffer 92-89 in a CVAC men’s game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. Anderson snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in the CVAC. Pfeiffer drops to 10-5, 5-3. The Trojans, who scored just 58 points in last Monday’s loss to Erskine, scored 49 in the first half on their way to a season-high point output. Their previous high was 87 against Belmont Abbey on Jan. 5. In addition to shooting 60 percent from the field, the Trojans shot 65 percent (11-17) from behind the arc and 75 percent (21-28) from the free throw line. Boykin, a senior from Atlanta, was 8-for-10 from the line and also had seven assists. Sellers, a freshman from Holly Hill, S.C., was 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line. J.R. Howell, who was 6-for-7 from behind the arc, added 19 points for Anderson. Tariq Naqqash and Kris Fudzinskas also reached double figures for Anderson with 12 points apiece. Pfeiffer’s DeMario Grier led all scorers with 31 points. Tavares Cooper added 17 for the Falcons. There were 14 lead changes and three ties in the game. After a tie at 31 with 5:06 remaining in the first half, Anderson went on a 14-3 run for a 45-34 lead with 1:47 left. Howell made two treys and Sellers made one during the run. The Trojans held the lead until the 5:54 mark of the second half when Grier buried a 3-point goal to give the Falcons a 77-74 lead. But Anderson didn’t fold. A layup by Boykin at the 3:36 mark gave Anderson an 82-81 lead. A 3-point goal by Howell, a free throw by Sellers, and two free throws by Boykin increased the Trojans’ lead to 88-81 with 1:41 remaining. The Falcons got within two points with nine seconds remaining but they could get no closer. Anderson averaged 1.10 points per possession, while Pfeiffer average 1.05.
