St. Andrews Rallies Late To Beat Anderson, 66-60January 14, 2006
LAURINBURG, N.C. - St. Andrews Presbyterian College outscored Anderson University 6-0 in the final 2:15 to beat the Trojans 66-60 in a CVAC men's game Saturday afternoon. St. Andrews improves to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the CVAC. Anderson now stands at 3-9, 1-5. St. Andrews was led by Bobby Short with 20 points and Dwayne Jeffcoat with 11. J.R. Howell scored 17 points and O'Tey Sellers tallied 13 to lead Anderson. Howell was 5-for-9 from behind the arc, while Sellers was 3-for-5 from long range. For the game, Anderson was 11-for-27 from behind the arc. The Knights led 45-37 with 16:17 to play, but the Trojans rallied to take a 50-49 lead with 8:48 left. Nathan Russell had five points and Sellers and Howell both contributed 3-point goals to the rally. Another 3-point goal by Howell and a layup by Sellers gave Anderson a 55-49 lead with 6:38 left. From that point, the Knights put together an 11-5 run to tie the game at 60 with 2:15 remaining. A layup by Short with 1:33 remaining put St. Andrews ahead for good. A putback by Chad Eichelberger with 33 seconds remaining and two free throws by Jeff Worley with 14 seconds to play sealed the victory for the Knights. In the final two minutes, Anderson had one turnover and missed two 3-point shots. Both teams struggled from the field in the first half but warmed up in the second half. St. Andrews shot 54 percent in the second half to finish the game at 46 percent, while Anderson shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the game at 39 percent.
