Trojan Volleyball in Costa Rica – Day OneAugust 6, 2014
The AU volleyball team is in the midst of a weeklong mission trip to Costa Rica.
The Trojans arrived in Central America Tuesday for their second visit in four years and are tentatively scheduled to play five or six matches against the Costa Rican Junior National team and various club teams, while also visiting orphanages and schools to share their Christian testimony during volleyball clinics for local teams.
Here is the team’s update from its first day …
“The team has ventured out to a cafè today and an orphanage. At the Cafè the team was able to sample a very good coffee that comes from one of the best farms in the world. After that, we ate at a restaurant that served a traditional Costa Rican meal and it was delicious.
After that we dove into ministry at an orphanage that housed 45 children who were either abandoned or had experienced some kind of abuse. We played games with them, gave them candy and then the owner told us about some of the kids.
One in particular was a young girl who was abused by her parents and never allowed her to cry. If she did cry, they would beat her. At one point they broke both of her legs to the point the doctors said she'd never walk. Fortunately an American heard about her story and raised the funds for her surgery and rehabilitation. She is walking and playing now.
Tonight we will play our first match versus the University of Costa Rica.”
