Boykin, Russell Lead Anderson Past Belmont Abbey, 87-76January 6, 2006
ANDERSON, S.C. – Alfred Boykin and Nathan Russell scored 19 points apiece to lead Anderson University to an 87-76 victory over Belmont Abbey in a CVAC men’s game Thursday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the CVAC, jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first nine and a half minutes, but Belmont Abbey, 2-6 and 1-2, put together a 14-4 run to tie the game at 25 with 4:44 left in the first half. From that point, there were five more ties and six lead changes before the end of the half. Anderson took the lead back for good on a 3-point goal by J.R. Howell with one second remaining in the first half. Howell’s trey gave Anderson a 39-37 lead at the break. In the second half, Anderson built its lead to as much as 13 points. The visiting Crusaders never got closer than seven points in the final 13 minutes. Anderson made 19 free throws in the second half to help keep its lead in double digits. John LeSueur added 15 points for the Trojans, Howell tallied 14, and O’Tey Sellers chipped in 12. Anderson’s 87 points was its highest output this season. Belmont Abbey was led by Greg LaVann with 18 points and Steve Williams with 14 points. Anderson shot 47 percent from the field while limiting Belmont Abbey to 37 percent. Anderson made 10 of 31 attempts from behind the arc. Howell made four treys. The Trojans, led by LeSueur’s game-high 10 rebounds, won the boards, 43-38. Anderson averaged 1.12 points per possession.
