Claflin Holds Off Anderson, 77-66December 12, 2005
ANDERSON, S.C. – Claflin snapped a tie at 34 with a 16-3 run and then held on to beat Anderson College 77-66 in a non-conference game Monday night at the Abney Center. Claflin, 3-4 overall, was led by Antonio Kelly with a game-high 24 points. Kelly made just 4 of 18 shots from the field, but he was 12-for-14 from the free throw line. Trailing 50-37 with 11:04 remaining, Anderson, 1-6 overall, put together a 12-0 run to cut the Claflin lead to 50-49 with 7:56 to play. J.R. Howell and Alfred Boykin both made 3-point goals during the run. But the Trojans would get no closer. The Panthers went on a 14-5 run to extend their lead to 10 – 64-54 – with 3:31 to play. From that point, Claflin made 13 free throws to keep its lead in double digits. The Panthers finished the game 23-for-33 from the line to outscore the Trojans by 15 points. Anderson made 8 of its 11 free-throw attempts. Alvin Greenwood added 17 points for Claflin and Artis Coulter chipped in 15. Anderson was led by Boykin with 23 points, and Aurimas Silys with 10 points. Claflin dominated the glass in the first half (25-11) and finished the game with a plus-10 margin (36-26) on the boards. Claflin’s Maurice Williams was the game’s leading rebounder with nine. In addition to his 24 points, Kelly had eight of Claflin’s 18 assists. Claflin shot 63 percent in the second half to finish the game at 44 percent and averaged 1.18 points per possession. Anderson shot 55 percent in the second half and 48 percent for the game.
