Child, Gillespie and Hash Named to the AFCU Gold StandardMay 15, 2014
ANDERSON, S.C. – After earning Female and Male Athlete of the Year honors at the AU Athletics Honors Night last month, seniors Abby Child and Chandler Hash along with junior Shannon Gillespie, were named to the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard for their outstanding performances during their respective 2013-14 seasons.
Hash capped his stellar career with Division II Bulletin Honorable Mention All-America accolades and an appearance in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Star Game. The Greer, S.C., native earned NABC First-Team All-District accolades and Daktronics First-Team All-Region honors after being named First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference for the second consecutive year. Hash, the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Tournament MVP, helped lead Anderson to its fourth NCAA Southeast Region Tournament appearance in five seasons, while leading the conference in scoring (24.3 ppg.) and ranking fifth in the nation.
His 778 total points was tops in NCAA Division II this season and marks the second-highest single-season total in league history. Hash concluded his career in third place on Anderson’s all-time scoring list with 1,537 career points and his career-high 44 points in the Trojans’ SAC Tournament semifinal appearance ranks seventh in the league all-time for points scored in a single game.
Gillespie, an outside hitter, helped lead the Trojans to their first-ever appearance in the South Atlantic Conference championship match and first NCAA Tournament victory in AU’s second Southeast Region tourney appearance. She was named First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference and garnered First-Team Daktronics All-Region accolades while also being named to the 2013 NCAA Southeast Region All-Tournament Team.
A native of Fishers, Ind., Gillespie set a new school record for kills in a single season and is currently seventh in AU’s record books with 1,193 career kills. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter led the SAC and ranked 15th in the nation with her 4.05 kills per set average and also paced the league in total kills, points and points per set. Gillespie ranked eighth in the SAC in digs (449) and 12th in digs per set (3.45). Off the court Gillespie earned Capital One First-Team Academic All-District honors.
Child, who was named Second-team All-Southeast Region, helped lead the Trojans to school-record win tallies in each of the last three seasons, while starting every contest during her impressive four-year career. The veteran shortstop posted a school-record 204 starts on the left side of the Trojan infield and tops the AU record books with 47 home runs, 136 walks and 197 RBI.
This season, Child slammed a league-leading and career-best 15 home runs and also led the SAC in RBI (62) and slugging percentage (.745), while ranking third in runs scored (55) and sixth in both hits (64) and doubles (14). The LaGrange, Ga., native collected second-team all-region honors following her sophomore campaign. She was named the 2014 Food Lion SAC Tournament MVP after recording seven hits in 12 at-bats (.583) during the four-game span, punctuated by three home runs, eight RBI, three walks and three runs during the tournament.
