Trojan Volleyball Signs Mitter and McFerronMay 9, 2014
ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University head volleyball coach Craig Mosqueda has announced that the Trojans have signed Marissa Mitter and Mallory McFerron to letters of intent, with the talented duo slated to join the squad for the 2014 campaign.
Mitter and McFerron join five signees who inked during the early signing period last November.
“Our last two additions definitely complement our five signees last fall,” said Mosqueda. “This class was key to improving our standing in the conference as well as improving our ability to compete at the regional and national level. I am very excited about the fall and to see what this team will be able to do.”
Mitter, a 6-foot outside hitter from Redondo Beach, Calif., is building on a stellar high school career and helped lead Head Coach Tommy Chaffins’ Redondo Union Seahawks to a stellar 29-7 overall record during her senior season. She was a three-year varsity letterwinner for the Seahawks, while also competing in sand volleyball. The team is currently ranked second in the state with an 8-2 record.
“Marissa is the type of player who can play multiple positions and is just as effective at either position,” added Mosqueda. “Marissa is very explosive offensively, is a very good defender and is super competitive. She will make an immediate impact on this team.”
Mitter also plays for Club Troy, which is coached by University of Southern California Associate Head Coach Tim Nolan. Club Troy has already qualified for the USA Nationals, which are slated for late June.
“We knew two wanted to get a versatile and dynamic player going into the signing period,” noted Mosqueda. “I had my eye on Marissa in the fall but we couldn’t get her on campus before the early signing period. Once she visited and I saw her play in Las Vegas, I knew that she would be a great fit and that Marissa could be a force in the South Atlantic Conference.”
Mitter also gets the job done off the court and will be expected to help the volleyball team compete for AU’s annual academic award. Mitter has two sisters, Natalie (15) and Emily (12). Her parents are Todd and Margaret Mitter.
McFerron is a 6-foot-2 left-handed right side hitter, and is hometown product from Anderson, S.C. McFerron is coming off an outstanding prep career at Wren High School. As a junior, McFerron earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades and was named MVP as a senior. McFerron also earned All-State honors and was named Region Player of the Year during her career. She garnered two additional All-Tournament nods - at the Hillcrest Invitational and the Pickens Blue Flame Tournament.
“I noticed Mallory a couple years ago at a club tournament and then her team came to our team camp last summer” added Mosqueda. “She has impressed me with her growth as a player and I look forward to her continued growth.”
McFerron has also enjoyed a very successful club career for Axis Elite and was chosen as an AAU Academic All-American last season. She has a brother, Garrett (21). Her parents are Curt and Barbara McFerron.
“Obviously the first thing you notice about Mallory is that she is 6-foot-2,” concluded Mosqueda. “She is a good athlete and Mallory has turned into an excellent player over that past two years and will compete for a spot on the right side.”
