Buzzer Beater Beats Trojans

MARS HILL, N.C. – Walt Baxley hit a 25-foot jumper as time expired to lift Mars Hill College over the visiting Trojans of Anderson College 66-64 Monday night at Stanford Arena. Baxley, who was named the SAC Player of the Week Monday morning, scored a game-high 25 points in the victory. In the Lions’ first four games, Baxley has averaged 27.0 points per contest. The Lions improved to 3-1 while Anderson falls to 1-3 on the season. Mars Hill led the entire first half and took a 34-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Trojans came out of the locker room ready to play and went on a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the contest at 41-40 after J.R. Howell hit a 3-pointer with 14:20 remaining in regulation. Anderson extended its lead to nine points -- 60-51 -- with 6:37 remaining after John LeSueur nailed a shot from behind the arc. Mars Hill then outscored Anderson 13-4 in the next six minutes to tie the contest at 64 with 25 seconds left. The tying basket was scored by Elliott McDowell off a great pass through the lane by Baxley. McDowell then stole Anderson's ensuing in-bounds pass a second later and head coach Terry Rogers called a timeout. After being directed to stall for a last second shot, Tony Blake held the ball at the top of the key until the clock dwindled to nine seconds. He handed the ball to Baxley, who drove to the right wing and lofted the game-winner as the buzzer sounded. Mars Hill received 26 points from their bench and scored 14 second chance points. The Lions won the rebound battle, 34-30. The game saw only four lead changes and one tie. Following Baxley for MHC was Marques Maxwell, who came off the bench to score 15 points. Chris Aline scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds. Four players scored in double-digits for Anderson. LeSueur scored 13 to lead the Trojans followed by Aurimas Silys and Howell who added 11 apiece. Silys recorded a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. Randy Javois contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
