Women's Tennis Splits Weekend SAC Matches

WINGATE, N.C. – Following a 5-4 win over Catawba on Friday, Anderson University women’s tennis dropped a 7-2 decision to South Atlantic Conference foe Wingate Saturday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex.

The setback snaps a brief three-match winning streak and drops the Trojans to 7-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Wingate, which entered the match as the No. 38 ranked team nationally, improved to 16-4 on the year and a perfect 9-0 in the SAC.

In the match against Catawba on Friday, the Trojans started strongly, as they captured two-of-three doubles matches. Senior Avery Owens and junior Karen Ching cruised to an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position, while junior Lindsay Gregory and freshman Rebecca Bruning notched an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 spot.

In singles, AU grabbed the necessary three matches to secure to victory as Ching notched a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 2, while Bruning added a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 3 slot. Gregory sealed the narrow win with a straight set, 7-5, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 position.

On Saturday, Anderson was unable to earn a team point in the doubles round, suffering setbacks in all three contests. The Trojans corralled two singles wins, as Bruning increased her singles winning streak to nine-straight with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Wingate’s Becca Thomas at No. 3. Gregory rounded out AU’s scoring on the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tiffany Williams at the No. 6 spot.

Anderson looks to get back on the winning track on Monday when it hosts Limestone. First serve from Max Grubbs Memorial Courts is slated for 2 p.m.
