Women's Tennis Defeats Lincoln Memorial, 8-1

ANDERSON, S.C. – After sweeping the doubles round, Anderson University women’s tennis cruised to an 8-1 victory over South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln Memorial Monday afternoon at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.

With the victory, the Trojans improve to an even 5-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in conference play, while the Lady Railsplitters drop to 6-5 for the 2014 campaign and an even 3-3 in the league.

In the doubles round, senior Avery Owens and junior Karen Ching notched an 8-6 decision over LMU’s tandem of Elena Vasilyeva and Gemma Goodland at the No. 1 position. The win is their fourth in their last five doubles matches and sixth this season.

At the No. 2 spot, junior Lindsay Gregory and freshman Rebecca Bruning tallied an 8-2 victory over Roksolana Prudyvus and Alexandra Granger, while the sophomore tandem of Alexandra Ebner and Nikkola Wichenko recorded an identical 8-2 win at No. 3.

Using the momentum from the singles round, the Trojans continued their winning ways, taking five of the six singles matches. Owens claimed her sixth singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2, while Bruning (No. 3) increased her winning total to eight for the season with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Priscilla Bulandres.

Ebner grabbed her fourth win in her last five appearances with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4, while Gregory defeated Granger 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot. Wichenko (No. 6) was the only Trojan to go into three sets as she knocked off Aura Penalosa in a 6-1, 1-6, 14-12 marathon win.

The Trojans will continue their grueling week of four matches in six days when they hit the road to Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday. First serve from Hickory is scheduled for 3 p.m.
