Erskine Beats Anderson In OT Again, 74-72

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Erskine's Craig Williams scored an inside basket with eight seconds remaining and Anderson missed two chances in the final seconds as the Flying Fleet beat the Trojans 74-72 in overtime Monday night at the Galloway Center. The victory was Erskine's second overtime decision against Anderson this season. The Fleet won at Anderson 68-66 in overtime on Jan. 17. Anderson is now 0-3 in overtime games this season. After leading by as many as 10 points late in the first half, Anderson went to the break clinging to a 32-28 lead. There were nine lead changes and two ties in the second half. The Trojans trailed 59-55 with 2:39 to play, but an inside basket by Osvaldo Haynes and a short jumper by John LeSueur tied the game at 59 with just under a minute remaining in regulation. A basket by Williams, who led all scorers with 30 points, gave the Fleet a 61-59 lead with 31 seconds to play. After Anderson committed a turnover, TJ Taylor made one of two free throws to put Erskine ahead 62-59 with 20.9 remaining. A 3-point basket by LeSueur tied the game at 62 with 7.9 seconds left, and Anderson forced a turnover on the inbounds play, but J.R. Howell runner from the right side rolled out to send the game to overtime. There were three ties and four lead changes in overtime. LeSueur canned back-to-back treys to give the Trojans a 72-20 lead with 1:28 remaining. Two free throws by Erskine's Reed Long tied the game at 72, then Anderson committed a turnover to give the ball to the Fleet with 27.8 seconds remaining. After Williams connected on the go-ahead basket, Anderson had two shots in the closing seconds, but the Trojans could not connect. Long added 18 for Erskine, 9-13 overall and 6-9 in the CVAC. Anderson was led by Chris Poore with 19 points, LeSueur with 14 points, and Howell with 13 points. Osvaldo Haynes grabbed 17 rebounds as Anderson won the boards by a 40-22 margin. In two games against Erskine this season, Haynes grabbed 36 rebounds. In his last 10 games, Haynes has pulled down 139 rebounds. Williams also was Erskine's leading rebounder with 10. Erskine shot 53 percent from the field, 67 percent in the second half, while Anderson shot 49 percent. Erskine scored 18 points off 16 Anderson turnovers. The Fleet committed just seven turnovers. The Trojans made a season-high 11 3-point goals (11-17). LeSueur was 4-for-6 from behind the arc. He has now made 19 of his last 36 shots from behind the arc.
