Late Free Throws Get Anderson Past Lees-McRae

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College made six free throws in the final 34 seconds to overcome a brilliant shooting performance by Lees-McRae's Treek Ramsuer and beat the Bobcats, 76-71 in a CVAC game Thursday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 9-11 overall and 7-7 in the CVAC, trailed 49-41 with 12:27 to play but rallied to take a 58-55 lead wtih 5:02 to play. John LeSueur, who finished with a career-high 22 points, led the Anderson comeback with two 3-point goals and one assist. Ramsuer then literally shot the Bobcats back into the game. He made four 3-point goals and two free throws in a span of three and a half minutes to keep Lees-McRae in the game. His fourth trey at the 1:07 mark gave the Bobcats a 69-68 lead -- the 13th lead change of the game. Anderson took the lead back on a layup by Ronald Bowers with 49 seconds remaining. After the Bobcats failed to score, Chris Poore made two free throws with 34 seconds to play to give Anderson a 72-69 lead. A basket by Antwon Brown cut the Trojan lead to one -- 72-71 -- with 23 seconds remaining, but Alfred Boykin pushed the AC lead by to three points by canning two free throws with 15 seconds left. After Ramsuer missed a 25-foot 3-point attempt, Boykin made two more free throws with three seconds remaining for the final margin. There were 14 lead changes and eight ties in the game, eight lead changes and five ties in the second half. In the first half, Anderson led by as many as eight points before Lees-McRae put together an 11-3 run for a 29-25 lead with 2:31 left. A 3-point goal by LeSueur with 21 seconds remaining in the first half gave Anderson a 35-32 lead at the break. LeSueur, a sophomore from Blountville, Tenn., was 7-for-9 from the field and 6-for-7 from behind the arc. Boykin added 17 points and Bowers scored 13 for the Trojans. Lees-McRae, 6-15 and 3-11, was led by Ramsuer, who 5-for-9 from behind the arc on his way to a game-high 27 points. Following Ramsuer for the Bobcats were Aaron Dugger with 15 points, Brown with 12 points, and Henri Williams with 11. Led by Osvaldo Hayne's game-high 11 rebounds, Anderson won the boards, 39-34. Haynes has pulled down 109 rebounds in Anderson's last eight games. With his first two rebounds of the game, Haynes moved into third place on the Anderson career rebounding list. Anderson shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the game at 47 percent, while Lees-McRae managed just 42 percent. The Trojans shot 23 more free throws and outscored the Bobcats by 10 points at the line. Both teams had 12 turnovers, but Anderson won the points off turnovers category, 17-10.
