Crusaders Take Down Trojans, 70-63

BELMONT, N.C. – Belmont Abbey snapped a tie at 46 with a 10-3 run and then held on for a 70-63 victory over Anderson College in a CVAC game Thursday night at the Wheeler Center. Belmont Abbey, 6-13 overall and 5-7 in the CVAC, placed four players in double figures – Anthony Bell 17, Steve Smith 16, Greg LaVann 13, and Damien Humphrey 10. The loss drops Anderson to 7-10, 5-5. Osvaldo Haynes led Anderson with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Haynes has two straight double-doubles, and he has pulled down 70 rebounds in Anderson’s last five games. Anderson rallied from a 40-36 halftime deficit to tie the game at 46. But a 3-point basket by Bell capped a 7-3 run to give the Crusaders a 56-49 lead with 8:01 to play. Field goals by Chris Poore, who finished with 13 points and Alfred Boykin pulled Anderson to within three – 56-53 – with 7:13 to play. But the Trojans would get no closer. A three-point play by Smith and two baskets by Bell gave Belmont Abbey a 63-53 lead with 5:49 to play. The Crusaders shot 43 percent from the field to 41 percent for Anderson. Belmont Abbey scored 21 points off 15 Anderson turnovers. LaVann had three of Belmont Abbey’s nine steals. Led by Haynes, Anderson won the boards, 40-33. Belmont Abbey averaged 1.13 points per possession, while Anderson averaged 1.00 per possession. Both teams made five 3-point goals. Belmont Abbey used a 13-4 run in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 40-36 lead at the break. There were 10 lead changes and five ties in the first half. Anderson’s largest lead was 14-6 at the 15:14 mark. After the Crusaders rallied to take a 16-14 lead at the 13:18 mark, the game stayed within five points the rest of the half. LeSueur, who made three 3-point goals in the first half, made two treys to take Anderson from a 25-22 deficit to a 28-25 lead with 6:23 to play in the first half.
