Trojans Host Converse on SaturdayMarch 7, 2014
ANDERSON, S.C. – After a week layoff, Anderson University women’s tennis returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Conference Carolinas member Converse at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
After capturing an 8-1 victory over South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill on Saturday, AU is an even 2-2 in conference play and 2-4 overall. With a win on Saturday, Anderson would post its first winning streak of the 2014 campaign and first since winning four in a row towards the end of last year.
In its last match against the Lions, Anderson swept the doubles round and captured five singles matches to seal the win. Junior Karen Ching recorded AU’s lone singles setback, dropping her first singles match after a four-match winning streak. The longest singles winning streak now belongs to senior Avery Owens, who has captured three-straight wins after beginning the year with three straight losses.
In doubles this season, Anderson’s No. 1 team of Owens and Ching is 3-3 for the season after being named to the annual Preseason All-SAC First Team list. The duo is coming off an 8-1 win over MHU’s tandem of Tatiana Dualiby and Lucy McLauren.
Converse enters the weekend with a 2-6 overall record and a two-match losing streak, being swept by SAC opponents Queens and Tusculum in its last two matches. Prior to their last two contests, the Valkyries grabbed two straight victories over Coker (5-4) and Spartanburg Methodist (9-0). Despite the short winning streak, Converse has failed to score a team point in all six losses this season.
In the Valkyries’ 5-4 win at Coker earlier this season, the visitors swept the doubles round and captured the needed two singles matches for the win. The bottom of the Converse lineup, consisting of Laura Morales (No. 5) and Tanishia Thomas (No. 6) sealed the win with straight-set victories. Morales captured the final set for Coker’s Rachel Soloman, 7-5, after winning the opening set, 6-4.
Last season, Anderson and Converse rekindled its long-standing rivalry dating back to when the teams were members of Conference Carolinas. The meeting in 2013 mark the first time AU and Converse met since the Black and Gold moved to the SAC prior to the 2011 season. The Trojans came away with a 9-0 win over the Valkyries on April 14, 2013.
