Late Runs Give Trojans 5-2 Win over Southern Wesleyan

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Crossing four runs in the top-half of the ninth inning, Anderson University baseball sealed a 5-2 win over nonconference opponent Southern Wesleyan Wednesday evening at Fluor Field, home of Minor League Baseball’s Greenville Drive.

The win is the Trojans’ fifth victory in a row and eighth of the season, as AU has won two-straight at the friendly confines of Fluor Field. SWU falls to 9-13 for the year.

Sophomore right-hander David Thompson completed his longest outing of the season, tossing seven complete innings, giving up just one hit and striking out a season-high eight batters. Despite the stellar performance, Thompson received no decision with the late inning heroics.

The win went to right-hander JT Trujillo who earns his first victory of the season, completing 1.1 innings with a strikeout and two walks. Junior Evan Jordan shut the door on the Warriors, earning the final two outs with a strike out, facing three batters.

Offensively, the Trojans pounded out 13 hits, but left 13 runners stranded and managed just one run through eight innings of play. After allowing a run in the fifth inning, Anderson answered in the seventh when sophomore first baseman Steven Cooper found the right center gap for a triple, scoring Brett Cash. For Cooper, the RBI triple was his second three-bagger of the year.

The Trojans grabbed their game-winning and insurance runs in the ninth as senior right fielder Paul Como singled through the left side, scoring Nathan Galliford and Cooper. Later in the inning, third baseman David Jones found the same hole in the infield and brought home Como and substitute Garrett Bernardo.

Despite a late run by the Warriors, Anderson held on for the win in the ninth inning, improving its record at Fluor Field to 2-1.

Starting catcher Ben Pendleton finished the contest 3-for-5 with three singles, tying Como for the team-high in hits. Cooper added a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI, as the sophomore now has a hit in 16 of his last 17 games.

Anderson returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when it begins a six-game conference road trip, beginning at Wingate for a three-game set. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
