Baseball Stumbles in Series Finale to UNG, 4-3

Box Score

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – After holding a 3-0 advantage through five innings, North Georgia scored twice in the sixth and seventh inning to capture a 4-3 win over Anderson University baseball, earning the nonconference series sweep, Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.

Second baseman Brett Cash paced the Trojan offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Cash tallied three of Anderson’s seven hits on the afternoon as the junior posted at least one hit for each game in the series.

First baseman Steven Cooper and outfielder Nathan Galliford each posted a double for the afternoon, as the duo combined for two RBI and a run scored. With a double in the two-run fifth inning, Cooper extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games, while Galliford improves his hitting streak to six games.

Junior right-hander Landon Beck earned the start for the day on the mound and tossed seven innings, giving up seven hits, but striking out 11 UNG hitters. Despite being tagged with the loss, Beck continues to increase his strikeout amount for the year, totaling 30 in 18.0 innings pitched, which leads the South Atlantic Conference.

Allowing just two hits over five innings, UNG broke through against Beck in the sixth inning when Eason Spivey launched his second home run of the series, scoring two runs and bringing the score to 3-2. UNG followed the sixth with two unearned runs in the seven, stemming from a defensive miscue, as Travis Naraine and pinch-hitter Beau Welborn scored the game-tying and eventual winning run in the inning.

Nighthawk closer Christian Turnipseed earned the save, throwing 0.2 innings and forcing to pop outs to close out the contest. The save was Turnipseed’s sixth of the season.

Anderson looks to bounce back on Tuesday as it seeks Beville Cup points against archrival Erskine. First pitch from Due West is slated for 2 p.m.
