Hale Notches Decision, Trojans Fall at No. 4 NewberryFebruary 20, 2014
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Sophomore Zak Hale posted Anderson University wrestling’s lone victory of the evening, as the Trojans fell to nationally-ranked Newberry 52-3 Thursday evening at Eleazer Arena.
Hale, who entered the dual with 17-4 record, continued his impressive run this season with an 8-4 decision over Newberry’s Trung Duong at 133. Hale closes the dual slate with 18 wins with five pins, a technical fall and five major decisions for the campaign.
Redshirt senior Cory Monteforte fought hard throughout his bout, but came up short in the end, falling to Travis Laxton at 125. Monteforte falls just shy of becoming the third Trojan this season to record double digit wins, dropping to 9-13 for the season.
“There were no surprises tonight. Newberry is exactly who we thought they were when you wrestle against a top five team,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “This was a disappointing conclusion to out dual meet season. Our sole focus is on the regional qualifying tournament and we look forward to the opportunity to qualify and compete at the national tournament.”
Anderson’s focus now shifts to the regional qualifier, beginning on Feb. 28 in Tiffin, Ohio. The qualifier will welcome 15 teams from Region II to the two-day event as the Trojans carried two wrestlers on their current roster that were ranked in the region’s top-8 in the latest Basford Rankings.
