Box Score

ANDERSON, S.C. – As four singles matches went three sets, Anderson University men’s tennis was on the opposite end of three of them, as the Trojans suffered their second straight setback, falling 8-1 to USC Aiken Wednesday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.

AU’s lone winner on the day was sophomore Inaki Iriberry who tallied a 7-6, 6-7, 10-5 win over Pacer Patrick Stiebinger at the No. 5 position. With the victory, Iriberry improves to 2-2 in singles action for the year.

Entering the singles round down 3-0, USC Aiken closed the match with three three-set wins as Paul Michael Calhoun was defeated by Lucas Gobbi at the No. 4 position 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) and freshman Mateo Rivas fell to Andy Quirk 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 2. At the No. 1 spot, freshman Juan Carracedo and Ettore Damiani went into three sets before Damiani won by default.

The loss brings Anderson’s record to 1-3 overall, while the visitors improve to 3-1. The 1-3 start to the season matches the starting mark in the 2012 year when the Trojans closed the campaign with an 11-8 record and the No. 2 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The Black and Gold return to conference action this weekend when it squares off with Coker on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Tusculum on Sunday at 1 p.m.
