Wrestling Closes Dual Schedule at Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – With the 2013-14 season winding down, Anderson University caps off its dual slate with a trip to in-state rival and nationally-ranked Newberry on Thursday. First bout from Eleazer Arena is set for 7 p.m.

The Trojans
After taking a 14-day layoff from its dual schedule, AU prepares for the regional qualifier on Feb. 28 with its final dual of the season at Newberry. The last time the Trojans took the mats, the Black and Gold fell short in the Battle for the Belt on Feb. 6, falling to nationally ranked UNC Pembroke.

In the latest Basford Rankings released last Monday, sophomore Zak Hale (133) found himself ranked third regionally, while junior Sean Turner was slotted sixth in the region at 149. Hale currently leads the team in victories with a 17-4 record, while Turner boasts a 7-3 mark.

Also posting double digit wins is graduate student Zane Newton with a 14-8 record as 12 of his 14 victories have come by decision. Newton has won two of his last three bouts, highlighted by a 5-4 decision over Coker’s Derek Rothermel for his last win.

The Wolves
After being ranked No. 4 in the country, Newberry was upset in its most recent dual, falling to UNC Pembroke 18-15 on Tuesday. The setback was the Wolves’ second loss of the season after dropping to national power Notre Dame on Jan. 12 at the NWCA National Duals in Des Moines.

In the latest Division II Rankings, four Wolves found spots at their respective weight class, as heavyweight Matt Wade carries the highest spot coming in at the No. 2 position. BJ Young is ranked No. 3 at 141, while Jeff Vesta is slotted seventh at 125. Joey Grisko rounds out the bunch ranked No. 8 at 197.

In the last three seasons, Newberry has lost just five duals in the span with just one loss at Eleazer Arena. Within the last three years, the Wolves have posted 51 dual victories, highlighted by a sixth-place finish at last year’s NCAA Division II Championships.

The Series
In the last four seasons, Newberry has posted victories over the Trojans, as AU stumbled at Eleazer Arena in last year’s regular season finale.
