Wrestling Closes Dual Schedule at Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – With the 2013-14 season winding down, Anderson University caps off its dual slate with a trip to in-state rival and nationally-ranked Newberry on Thursday. First bout from Eleazer Arena is set for 7 p.m.

The Trojans
In its only two home duals of the season, AU dropped back-to-back matches against Coker on Jan. 30 and national- ranked UNC Pembroke last Thursday. On Saturday, senior Dan Telhada, who wrestled unattached at the Newberry Open, placed second at 157.

In the latest Basford Rankings released on Monday, sophomore Zak Hale (133) found himself ranked third regionally, while junior Sean Turner was slotted sixth in the region at 149. Hale currently leads the team in victories with a 17-4 record, while Turner boasts a 7-3 mark.

Also posting double digit wins is graduate student Zane Newton with a 14-8 record as 12 of his 14 victories have come by decision. Newton has won two of his last three bouts, highlighted by a 5-4 decision over Coker’s Derek Rothermel for his last win.

The Wolves
Ranked No. 3 in the latest Division II Coaches poll, Newberry is 17-1 in duals this season as three Wolves were ranked in the top-8 nationally. NC holds a six-dual winning streak after posting a perfect 4-0 record the Super Region 2 Duals on Jan. 25. Since the duals, the Wolves claimed wins over King (30-9) on Jan. 30 and Shorter (22-21) last Thursday.

Senior heavyweight Matt Wade is currently ranked No. 2 in the country as he enters Thursday with a 30-4 record with 11 pins. Wade, from Easton, Md., has claimed five straight bouts and has won 24 of his last 25. Wade’s lone setback in the span came against Notre Dame’s Orlando Scales by a 4-1 decision.

Senior BJ Young joins Wade on the national rankings, claiming the No. 3 position at 141. Young went a perfect 3-0 with three technical falls as the Super Region 2 Duals. In Newberry’s last two duals, Young earned a 7-2 decision against King and a first period pin against Shorter.

Senior Jeff Vesta, who is 24-8 at 125, rounded out the Wolves in the national polls, ranking sixth.

The Series
In the last four seasons, Newberry has posted victories over the Trojans, as AU stumbled at Eleazer Arena in last year’s regular season finale.
