Trojans Set to Face Golden Bulls on Tuesday

ANDERSON, S.C. – The No. 20 Anderson University softball team is slated to face its second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opponent on Tuesday, as the Trojans will visit Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, N.C. First-pitch versus the Golden Bulls at Biddleville Park is set for 2 p.m.

Anderson is riding a season-opening six-game win streak after sweeping Lees-McRae, North Greenville and Chowan, marking the Trojans’ best start since the 2010 campaign. 

Senior shortstop Abby Child paced the Trojan offensive attack versus the Hawks on Sunday, going 6-for-7 at the plate with a pair of home runs and a double, while driving in eight runs. Senior Charlotte Sieber added three singles in four at-bats in the doubleheader, while sophomore center fielder Molly Child tallied five hits, including a home run and a pair of doubles and drove in four runs. Senior first-baseman Danielle Swygert was 4-for-6 and junior Jessica Neidigh was 3-for-6 with a double and a sacrifice fly.

Junior right-hander Katelynn Howser (2-0) and freshman Lauren Rudesheim (3-0) each collected wins in the circle, while freshman hurler Augie Pena worked a perfect inning of relief, striking out the side in the fifth inning of the opener. The trio combined to limit Chowan to seven hits over 11 innings, while striking out 15 and walking five.

On the season, Abby Child leads the Trojans with her .611 batting average (11-for-18) and has already recorded three doubles and 12 RBI on the season. She leads the South Atlantic Conference in RBI, ranks second in total hits, third in doubles, fourth in batting average and fifth in on-base and slugging percentage. Swygert is seventh in the league, hitting .529, while Molly Child has eight hits in 19 at-bats, including two home runs and a pair of doubles. The sophomore leads the league in runs scored (10) and is tied for 20th with her .421 batting average. Neidigh has hit safely in all six games and has driven in five runs on the season and is also tied for 20th in the SAC, hitting at a .421 clip.   

In the circle, Rudesheim is tied for third in the conference with her three victories and is ninth in ERA (1.00). Pena is tied for third in strikeouts per contest, averaging 8.75 K’s a game.   

The Golden Bulls
Johnson C. Smith (0-2) finished last season with an 11-28 overall record, including a 6-11 mark in the CIAA a year ago. 

The Golden Bulls opened this season with a pair of five-inning 8-0 setbacks to South Atlantic Conference-member Brevard last Friday in Charlotte, with a trio of freshmen, shortstop Jocelyn Hernandez, Breanna Archibald and third baseman Morgan Hasty, each collecting a hit for Johnson C. Smith on the afternoon.    

Tuesday afternoon’s twin bill wraps up the Golden Bulls’ season-opening four game homestand, as Johnson C. Smith hits the road for five consecutive contests before returning to Biddleville Park to host Salem International on Sunday, Feb. 23.
