Baseball Stumbles in Series Finale to UNC Pembroke, 14-7

Box Score

ANDERSON, S.C. – Equaling its highest hit total on the season of 14, Anderson University baseball was unable to keep up with the offensive attack of UNC Pembroke, as the Trojans dropped the third game of the series, 14-7, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

The Trojans matched Saturday’s Game One total of 14 hits, as four players notched two hits for the day. Left fielder Nathan Galliford paced the lineup with a 2-for-5 afternoon, headlined with a long two-run home run that cleared the center-field wall. For the senior, the round tripper was his second in as many days, which currently leads the team.

Also totaling two hits was second baseman Kyle Bailey who matched Galliford’s 2-for-5 effort with two runs scored and an RBI. Bailey now leads AU with six hits and a .462 batting average for the young season.

First baseman Steven Cooper was the final Trojan to a post a 2-for-5 afternoon, driving in one run to go along with a run scored. The sophomore was one of five players in the lineup to record extra base hits, joining shortstop Brett Cash, who recorded his first hit of the season, Bailey and senior David Jones.

“I’m disappointed with the effort today,” Anderson head coach Joe Miller said. “We hit the ball, but we have to stop the other team from scoring as many runs. Despite the loss, I’m excited for the future with the lineup with the way we hit the ball today, because we faced some quality pitchers this weekend.”

The Braves captured the series sweep, as they totaled 42 hits for the three-game set, including 21 on the day. Leading the way for UNCP was second baseman Daniel Fraga who closed the series 7-for-16 after posting four hits for the afternoon. Following Fraga was third baseman Jordan Edgerton with a 4-for-6 performance with two doubles. For the series, Edgerton, who was named to the NCBWA Preseason All-America Team prior to the start of the season, went 6-for-13 with three doubles and three RBI.

UNC Pembroke, which entered the weekend ranked No. 16 nationally in the College Baseball Lineup Poll, improves to 3-0 for the season, matching its start from a season ago in which the Braves strung together nine straight wins, eventually closing their season with a 38-16 record.

Anderson looks to get back on the winning track on Tuesday when it heads to archrival Erskine for the first leg of a season-long three-game series. First pitch from Grier Field is slated for 2 p.m.
