Wrestling Drops to Coker, 28-17

ANDERSON, S.C. – Despite earning four wins on the night, Anderson University wrestling was unable to keep up with regional opponent Coker, as the Trojans suffered a 28-17 setback Thursday evening at the Abney Athletic Center.

Redshirt senior Cory Monteforte led off the Trojan scoring with a 13-3 major decision for his third straight victory and fourth win in his last six bouts. For the season, Monteforte has seven victories heading into the final stretch of the year.

Sophomore Zak Hale continued the winning trend with a narrow decision over Coker’s Charlie Huff, 8-7. With the win, Hale continues to hold the team-high in victories for the 2013-14 campaign with 16.

Following a pair of pins by the Cobras, graduate student Zane Newton earned a narrow 5-4 decision against Coker’s Derek Rothermel at 157. The decision was Newton’s 11th win by decision this season and 14th overall, which ranks second on the squad.

Senior Ian Harper made it two straight wins at 165 with a major decision over Phillip Burrows, 12-0.

After a Coker win at 174, senior Taylor Dorsett rounded out the Anderson scoring with a 10-4 decision over Jacob Ralph at 184, giving AU its final advantage of the dual. For Dorsett, the decision was his first victory of the season.

“We wrestled very well at certain weights tonight and I was pleased with our overall effort,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “Giving up falls are critical in winning dual meets and we must do a better job at not allowing that under any circumstance. Having five guys winning their individual matches, it means we’re starting to focus in with our preparations for the regional tournament. The road does not get any easier next week, but we look forward to competing in front of capacity crowd for our Golden Game”

Anderson looks to bounce back on Thursday, Feb. 6 when it hosts the Battle for the Belt against UNC Pembroke. The first bout with the Braves is set for 7 p.m.
