Women's Tennis Selected Third, Owens & Ching Honored by Conference

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a 13-win season and a trip to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship match, Anderson University women’s tennis was selected third in the annual SAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, while senior Avery Owens was tabbed first team in singles and doubles with junior Karen Ching, released Thursday by the conference office.

Owens, who was joined by Ching to complete the first-team doubles tandem, finished a perfect 9-0 in SAC singles matches for the season, en route to a 15-2 overall singles record. In doubles, Owens and Ching finished 15-4 for the 2013 campaign. The Clinton, S.C. native has totaled a combined 35 singles win through three seasons.

Owens joins a pair from Wingate in Ali Evers and Becca Thomas on the first-team, along with Newberry’s Susana Aguirre, Catawba’s Liz Renteria and Carson-Newman’s Stefy Stand. On the doubles side, the duo of Owens and Ching joins Newberry’s pair of Aguirre and Romina Adum and Wingate’s Thomas and Evers round out the first-team doubles list.

In the annual poll, the Trojans finished 18 points behind conference favorite and defending SAC champion, Wingate, which claimed eight first-place votes. Tusculum finished behind the Bulldogs in second-place with 107 points and the final four first-place votes.

Following AU was Newberry (81 points) in fourth, Queens (79) in fifth and Lincoln Memorial (78) in sixth. Catawba placed seventh with 69 points, while Carson-Newman finished eighth with 46 points. Mars Hill claimed the ninth position, while Coker (29), Brevard (28) and Lenoir-Rhyne (20) round out the poll, respectively.

After being projected to finish second each of the last two seasons, the Trojans were given their lowest ranking since being projected fourth in 2011.

Anderson opens its 2014 season on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it kicks off conference play with Newberry. First serve from the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts is set for 2 p.m.
