Carracedo, Rivas on SAC Second Team, Trojans Picked Fourth

ROCK HILL, S.C. – After earning a regular season South Atlantic Conference championship in 2013, Anderson University men’s tennis was projected to finish fourth in the 2014 Preseason SAC Coaches’ Poll, as the freshmen duo of Juan Carracedo and Mateo Rivas have been named to the second-team doubles team, announced by the league office on Thursday.

Carracedo and Rivas were the lone Trojans to be honored on the preseason team, as the tandem enters the season as the No. 4 ranked doubles pair in the Southeast Region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). During the fall season, the duo claimed three victories at the ITA Southeast Region on Sept. 26-30, including a win over Lander’s Adam Jonsson and Vincent Verpaux, who were ranked No. 2 in the tournament.

Joining Carracedo and Rivas on the second-team doubles team are William Marrafao and Martin Moncayo from Coker and Tusculum’s John Taylor and Jonah Winkelmann.

In the annual poll, the Trojans grabbed 91 points, as the top-five teams each recorded 90 or more points, as the league is projected to be top-heavy. Wingate is projected to win the league with 107 points and five first-place votes. The Bulldogs finished just eight points ahead of Tusculum, which corralled 99 points and three first-place votes. Lincoln Memorial, the team that won the conference tournament championship in 2013, was projected third with 93 points two first-place votes.

Behind Anderson for fifth place was Coker which earned the final two first-place votes and 90 points. Newberry (71 points) and SAC newcomer Queens (70) finished in sixth and seventh, respectively, while Catawba (54) claimed the eighth spot and Mars Hill (42) was slotted ninth.

Carson-Newman (35), Brevard (22) and Lenoir-Rhyne (18) rounded out the preseason poll, respectively.

Historically, the fourth spot is the lowest ranking Anderson has received in the annual poll since the Trojans joined the league in 2010-11. After being predicted to win the SAC in 2011, AU was slotted second in the 2012 and 2013 polls.

The Black and Gold begins its 2014 campaign with Division I opponent Clemson on Saturday. That match from CU’s Hoke Sloan Tennis Courts is set for 4 p.m.
