Beck Earns Second-Team Honors, Trojans Picked 10th

ROCK HILL, S.C. – With the 2014 baseball season beginning on Saturday, the South Atlantic Conference has announced its annual Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll and all-conference Teams, as Anderson University baseball was projected 10th and junior right-hander Landon Beck was named to the second team, announced by the league office on Monday.

Beck, who was named to the All-SAC Second Team at the conclusion of last season, finished his 2013 campaign with a 3.09 ERA and eight saves. Currently, Beck is nine saves from tying the school record held by Nick Wates (2000-03) who totaled 19.

With Beck’s Preseason All-SAC honor, it marks the third straight season AU has placed a player on the preseason second team, as Erick Sanderson was named to the season-team a season ago and Thomas Padro in 2012.

The Trojans finished with 20 points in the poll, as Catawba, last season’s regular season champion, was tabbed the preseason favorite with 97 points and nine first-place votes. Tusculum and Wingate each finished with 78 points to draw even for second-place, while SAC newcomer Coker, which advanced to last season’s Division II College World Series, was projected fourth with 76 points.

Newberry came in fifth in the poll, while grabbing the final two first-place votes. The Tennessee tandem of Lincoln Memorial, which won last season’s SAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, and Carson-Newman finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Finishing eighth was Lenoir-Rhyne with 42 points and Brevard followed in ninth-place with 22 points, two ahead of the Trojans, who placed 10th in the preseason poll for the second straight season. Mars Hill rounded out the rankings, finishing 11th and with 19 points.

Anderson begins its 2014 season at home on Saturday when it welcomes Peach Belt Conference member to Anderson Memorial Stadium. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
