Balanced Attack Lifts Trojans to Third Straight Win

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. – Using a late first-half run and with four players reaching double figures for the third time this season, the Anderson men’s basketball team claimed its third straight win by topping Brevard, 75-65, in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Boshamer Gymnasium.

Anderson (12-5, 7-4 SAC) claimed its fifth straight victory past the Tornados while improving to 7-1 on the road with its fifth straight road victory. Brevard slipped to 3-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference with its fourth straight loss and has dropped six of its last seven outings.

Senior guard CJ Gleaton recorded his fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 19 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Senior guard Chandler Hash added 18 points and dished out a team-high four assists, while junior center Chris Ross tallied 17 points in 26 minutes of action. Junior guard Myson Jones chipped in 10 points, handed out three assists and pulled down three rebounds.

Brevard junior forward Darius Moose led all scorers with 22 points and recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Jake Pifer notched 16 points, with sophomore guard Miles Leathers netting 11 and senior guard Dominique Pickett adding 10 for the Tornados.

The Trojans held a commanding 42-26 advantage on the boards, while Brevard out-shot AU, 47.3 percent to 42.6 percent on the night.

“CJ did a great job rebounding tonight,” said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. “We got good offensive contributions from four guys tonight, but I’m glad [Brevard] ran out of time. They shot over 64 percent from the field in the second half and we couldn’t stop them at the end. I want to see us put together two good halves and we’ll keep plugging away until we do.”

The Trojans used an early 7-0 outburst over a span of 2:23 to turn a two-point deficit into a 9-4 advantage, as Jones sparked the run with a jumper and Hash added five straight for Anderson.

After the Trojans took a 17-12 edge with 11:29 remaining in the first half, both teams went cold from the field, as the Tornados went more than three minutes with just a free throw from Harrison White, while the Trojans were scoreless for nearly four minutes before Ross dropped in six straight points for AU and the Trojans pushed out to a 21-15 lead with 6:35 on the clock.

Jones gave Anderson its largest lead of the opening 16 minutes, at 26-17, with his first 3-pointer of the night with less than four minutes remaining in the half. Moose, who scored 10 first-half points, countered with a close jumper for the Tornados.

But Brevard would not score a field goal over the final 3:54 of the opening half, as the Trojans erupted on an 11-2 run to close the half and took a 37-20 lead at intermission. Gleaton netted six straight for Anderson during the surge, with sophomore Steven Faust adding a putback and Jones capping the run with a 3-pointer.

Brevard climbed within 41-31 at the 15:42 mark of the second half on a 3-pointer from Pickett, with Hash countering with his second trey of the night before Moose connected on his second 3-pointer and another jumper to again pull Brevard as close as 47-39 with 12:18 remaining in the contest.

With 6:38 left in the game, Hash drained two free throws to give the Trojans a 61-44 cushion, their largest of the contest, but Brevard chipped away and edged back within 68-60 with less than three minutes left on a long jumper from  Trevon Shaw. But Brevard would get no closer than eight in the final moments, as the Trojans drained five-of-six free throws in the final 57 seconds to seal the win.

The Trojans open the second half of their conference double round-robin schedule on Saturday when they play host to league-newcomer Queens in the first meeting this season between the two squads. Tip-off at the Abney Athletic Center is slated for 4 p.m.
