Cobras Cut Down Anderson In Overtime, 74-69

ANDERSON, S.C. – Coker College rallied from a five-point deficit in the final 1:06 of regulation then outscored Anderson College 11-6 in overtime to upset the Trojans 74-69 in the first round of the 2004 CVAC Tournament at the Abney Center Tuesday night. Coker, seeded 11th in the tournament, improves to 8-19 and advances to play Queens (N.C.) in the second round Wednesday night in Charlotte. Anderson, the sixth seed in the tournament, ends its season at 13-15. Anderson beat Coker twice during the regular season, but the third time was the charm for the Cobras. The Trojans, coming off a double-overtime victory over Queens Sunday afternoon, led 35-29 at the half and by as many as 10 points – 60-50 with 3:26 remaining in the game – before the Cobras struck back. In the final 2:06, the Trojans went scoreless from the field while Coker went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 63 and send it to overtime. Jason Fulwood made a 3-point goal at 1:06, and Jamie Jenkins made two free throws with 47 seconds remaining to cut the Anderson lead to 63-60. With 11 seconds remaining, Jay Farrow converted a 3-point play to tie the game at 63. After an Anderson miss, the game went to overtime. In overtime, Anderson got field goals from Osvaldo Haynes and Travis Tate to take a 67-65 lead with 2:31 to play. But Rico Stewart banked in a 3-point goal with 1:35 left to give the Cobras a 68-67 lead. Coker never trailed again. After two free throws by Fulwood increased Coker’s lead to 72-69 with 17 seconds remaining, the Trojans got one more shot. Joel C. Zimmerman fired a 3-point shot from the top of the key that bounced away and the Cobras had the upset. Farrow led Coker with 19 points. He was followed by Michael Pierce with 14 and Jason Fulwood with 13. Anderson placed three players in double figures. Tate had 17 points, Haynes scored 15, Zimmerman tallied 13, and Chris Poore chipped in 12. Anderson struggled from the field and from the free throw line. The Trojans shot 39 percent from the field, 33 percent in the second half, and made just 17 of 25 from the line. Coker shot 50 percent in the second half (16-32) and 49 percent for the game. Coker won the boards, 45-31. Farrow had 11 rebounds for Coker, and Haynes had 11 for Anderson. Anderson scored 23 points off 22 Coker turnovers, while the Cobras scored 18 points off 12 Anderson turnovers. AC-Coker Box Final Statistics
