Trojans Earn 28-27 Victory Over King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – In a dual that saw five pins, Anderson University wrestling uses the tiebreaker rule to its advantage as the Trojans grabbed their second victory in their last three duals over King 28-27 Saturday afternoon at King’s Student Center Complex.

According to the fourth criteria 3.15.4 on deciding a tiebreaker, Anderson was awarded the dual victory after the match ended in a tie when King’s Blaike Henry won by fall over Anderson’s Eric DeAngelis at 184. Since AU’s Cory Monteforte recorded the first takedown of the dual at 125, AU was awarded the victory.

Monteforte eventually grabbed his second pin of the season when he defeated Reed Jacks three minutes into the bout. The redshirt senior has now won three of his last four bouts and has five wins at 125 for the year.

After sophomore Zak Hale won by forfeit at 141, junior Sean Turner continued Anderson’s winning ways and nabbed his third pin of the year over Frank Yattoni at the 2:55 mark. With the win, Turner improves to 7-2 at 149 on the year.

Graduate student Zane Newton continues to impress as he added three points to AU’s score with a 5-2 decision over Chance Smith. Newton, who is second on the team in wins behind Hale, is 11-5 on the year and has won three of his last four bouts.

Following a King pin, senior Ian Harper clinched the victory for the Trojans and picked up his first win of the year with a first period pin over Jordan Reece.

"This was a tremendous effort by the guys today,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “Even though the odds were against us, the guys battled past that and pulled out a tough victory. It's always intense when you have to go to the tiebreaker criteria to decide a dual meet. We are going to take a few days off, and then get ready for the regional duals next weekend."

With the win, Anderson adds its first regional win as it heads to the Super Region 2 Duals on Jan. 25 in Newberry, S.C. The Trojans begin the day with Findlay at 9 a.m., followed by Shippensburg (10:30 a.m.), Tiffin (1:30 p.m.) and Indianapolis (3 p.m.).
