Wrestling Travels to King for Regional Contest on Saturday

ANDERSON, S.C. – Suffering a regional setback Wednesday evening at Belmont Abbey, Anderson University wrestling hits the road once again for a key regional dual with King on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. at King’s Student Center Complex.

The Trojans
After earning its first win of the season with a 30-22 victory over Central Florida at the Virginia Duals last weekend, AU was unable to continue its winning ways on Wednesday, falling to Belmont Abbey. Despite the setback, a pair of Trojans added wins to their overall record, highlighted by sophomore Zak Hale’s win at 141.

Hale picked up his 11th straight win on the season, moving to 11-3 overall with a second period pin over BAC’s Clemente Narviaz. The win by fall was Hale’s fourth straight pin, as five of his 11 wins have come by fall.

Joining Hale in the win column against the Crusaders was graduate student Zane Newton who earned his 10th win on the year, moving to 10-5 overall. Newton tallied a narrow 10-9 decision over John Glunt at 157, as the Greenwood, S.C. native is 9-3 at 157 for the year.

Snapping his six-bout winning streak on Wednesday evening, junior Sean Turner looks to bounce back at 149 after losing by fall to Sean Webb. For the year, Turner is 6-2 and is ranked No. 7 regionally in the latest Basford Rankings.

The Tornado
Competing in just three duals prior to Saturday’s matchup, King enters Saturday with a 1-2 record with back-to-back setbacks to Coker (23-15) and Limestone (22-21). Prior to the loss, the Tornado earned a 27-14 win over Brewton-Parker in a neutral site dual at Coker. Before their dual schedule, the Tornado placed 14th at the Midwest Classic to close their 2013 schedule.

Leading the way with the most wins on the team (18) is the duo of heavyweight Garrett Fosdyck and Frank Yattoni (149). Despite leading the team in victories, Yattoni dropped a 5-2 decision to Limestone’s Melchiesedac LaVargne, while Fosdyck added a first period pin over Jeremiah Parker.

Follow the tandem are junior Chance Smith (149), who sat out against Limestone, and Eldon Valery (184) as they each carry 16 wins on the year. Valery was unable to add on to his win total against Limestone, falling 2-0 to Justin Tribble at 197.

The Series
Saturday’s dual marks the first time Anderson and King will square off since the 2005-06 season as AU knocked off the Tornado 36-15 on Feb. 4, 2006.
