Wrestling Falls to Belmont Abbey, 40-8January 15, 2014
BELMONT, N.C. – Despite sophomore Zak Hale’s fourth straight pin and graduate student Zane Newton’s 10-9 decision, Anderson University wrestling could not string together its second straight win as the Trojans fell to Belmont Abbey 40-8 Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
Hale improved to 11-3 on the season, earning a second period pin over Clemente Narviaz at 141. The Shaftsbury, Vt. native now has four pins on the season.
Newton, who becomes the second Trojan this season to post double digit wins, notched a 10-9 decision at 157 over John Glunt. The graduate student moves to 10-5 on the year and has won two of his last three bouts.
Senior Cory Monteforte (125) suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to Patrick Mestrez snapping a two-bout winning streak. With the setback, Monteforte is now 4-10 on the season.
“We did not wrestle well tonight,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “These regional matches are critical for seeding purposes, so we must be prepared both mentally and physically to compete. We look forward to traveling up to Tennessee and competing this weekend.”
The Trojans continue their regional schedule as they head to King College on Saturday with the first bout slated to begin at 3 p.m.
