Hale Notches Three Pins, Wrestling Earns First Win at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. –Highlighted by junior Sean Turner and sophomore Zak Hale’s combined five pins on the afternoon, Anderson University closed its 2014 Virginia Duals campaign with a 1-2 record Friday afternoon at the Hampton Coliseum.

The Trojans began their day with back-to-back setbacks to Stevens Tech (37-15) and Apprentice School (28-23), but responded with their first dual victory of the season, knocking off Central Florida 30-22 in their final dual of the tournament.

Despite the opening losses of the tournament, Hale continues to impress at 141, totaling three pins on the day, headlined by a first period pin of Apprentice School’s Derek Burhenn in the consolation bracket. With the victories, Hale became the first Trojan to reach 10 wins on the season, moving to 10-3, as he has strung together 10 straight wins after suffering three losses at the Virginia Quad Meet.

Also going undefeated on the afternoon was Turner, adding two pins and a technical fall at 149. Turner grabbed the quickest pin of the season by any Trojan, defeating Central Florida’s Andrew Doobay in 29 seconds. For Turner, the three wins increases his winning streak to six on the season.

Posting two wins on the afternoon was Cory Monteforte with two decisions, Keenan Simmons, and Stephen Wylie who clinched the 30-22 win over UCF with his 7-3 decision over Sean Mann at 174. Earlier, Wylie added his first collegiate pin, defeating Apprentice School’s Chris Kennedy in just 54 seconds.

Graduate student Zane Newton added a win against Apprentice School, but suffered setbacks against Stevens Tech and UCF. For the season, Newton is 9-5.

"It's good to be back on the wrestling mats after the semester break,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “I thought that our conditioning was okay and we have a key region match against Belmont Abbey on next week. We look forward to the challenge. Region matches are critical for higher seeding purposes at the regional tournament, so I expect the guys to be focused and sharp.”

Anderson continues its grueling road schedule with a trip to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The opening bout is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
