Wrestling Grabs Three Decisions, Stumbles at Limestone, 38-9December 4, 2013
GAFFNEY, S.C. – With new faces in the starting lineup, Anderson University wrestling recorded three decisions, but was unable to keep up with Limestone, falling 38-9 Tuesday evening at Timken Arena.
“It's not the ideal way that we wanted to end the semester (with a loss),” head coach Dock Kelly said. “But I am pleased with the way that several of our guys wrestled. Prior to this match, we stressed putting a tremendous amount of effort for every second of the match.”
Graduate student Zane Newton continues to add victories to his personal record, as he tallied his sixth decision of the season with a 5-2 win over Limestone’s Storm Nelson at 157. Newton is 8-3 on the year, as his eight wins currently leads the team.
Also picking up wins on the night was freshman Stephen Wylie, who added a hard fought 6-3 decision over Ryan Buchanan at 165. Wylie, who has dropped his last five bouts, picked up his second collegiate victory of his young career.
Making his first appearance in a dual for his career, freshman Anthony Colon gave Anderson its first points of the evening at 141. Colon was able to knock off LC’s Terrence Dugay with an 8-7 decision for his second win of the season.
Despite the three wins on the evening, the Trojans were unable to match Limestone’s scoring, as the Saints improve to 2-1 on the season.
“Coming off of the Thanksgiving break, I am pleased with the effort that all of the guys put forth tonight,” Kelly said. “With the start of our exams, we plan to make the most of our extended break, and then turn our attention to the Virginia Duals in January.”
Anderson will take time away from the mats for the rest of the year and focus on its finals. The Trojans return to action on Jan. 10-11 for the Duals in Hampton, Va. The schedule for the annual event is scheduled to be released a few days prior to the two-day tournament.
