Gillespie and Pittman Earn All-Southeast Region Volleyball HonorsDecember 3, 2013
SAVANNAH, Ga. – After helping lead the Trojans to a berth in the NCAA Southeast Region Tournament, juniors Shannon Gillespie and Hailey Pittman have been named to the 2013 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Volleyball team, as announced earlier today.
“This has been an exciting year for our volleyball program,” said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. “With Hailey and Shannon being honored as all-conference and now all-region, it shows not only how hard these two individuals have worked but also how hard this team has worked to grow into a championship-level team. Hailey and Shannon have both worked extremely hard to perfect their craft and the results are showing.”
Gillespie, a first-team selection, leads the South Atlantic Conference in kills, kills per set, points and points per set and ranks ninth in the nation in points per set and 11th in kills per set. The Fishers, Ind. native is seventh in AU’s record books with 1,151 career kills and has notched 23 double-doubles on the season, while tallying double figure digs on 27 occasions. Gillespie is just 15 kills shy of equaling the Trojans’ all-time single-season mark of 519 kills, which was set during the 2007 season by former AU standout Amanda Edwards.
Pittman was named to the second team after ranking sixth in the SAC with her .327 attacking percentage and is third in the league with 406 total kills. She is second on the squad with 72 total blocks on the season and has reached double-figure kills on 25 occasions this season, including 13 of the last 14 matches. Pittman’s current hitting percentage is just .001 behind her 2012 accuracy, which ranks third all-time in Anderson’s single-season record books.
Wingate senior rightside hitter Anna Hilton was named the Southeast Region Player of the Year while Armstrong Atlantic State University paced all schools with three first-team honorees.
The 2013 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and a three-time Daktronics Southeast Region First Team honoree, Hilton headlines a first team that includes players from four different schools that will be competing in the upcoming NCAA Southeast Regional, which begins on Thursday in Wingate, N.C. The No. 9-ranked Bulldogs also landed junior middle hitter Lexi Potter on the first-team squad, while No. 17-ranked Armstrong had three first-team honorees: senior outside hitter and 2013 Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Jessica Santaniello, senior and 2013 Peach Belt Conference Setter of the Year Megan Pando and senior middle hitter Kristen Holmes. SAC Tournament finalist Anderson landed Gillespie on the first team while senior libero Caitlyn Dean from Tusculum earns a spot on the All-Region team for the fourth time, with three of those four years being a first-team selection.
Members of the first team are now eligible for Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America honors. The Daktronics NCAA DII teams are voted on by the NCAA Division II members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) from the Southeast Region, which is comprised of schools from Conference Carolinas, the South Atlantic Conference and the Peach Belt Conference.
The second team features two players from regional participant Flagler in senior outside hitter Emilee Taylor and sophomore libero Caitlyn Kovach. Armstrong’s second-team selection is junior outside hitter Stephanie Sfara while Wingate’s second-team selection is junior setter Alison Cooke. Regional participant Queens placed senior outside hitter Keri Kemp on the squad as did Conference Carolinas champion Belmont Abbey with sophomore outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg, the 2013 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. Lenoir-Rhyne’s junior outside hitter Haley Rhyne, Montevallo’s senior middle hitter Manyi Ati and Anderson’s Pittman round out the second team honorees.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition.
Following their runner-up effort in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, the fifth-seeded Trojans will face No. 4 seed Tusculum in a rematch of the SAC semifinals that saw the Trojans outlast the higher-seeded Pioneers in five sets. First-serve in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Thursday is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Wingate’s Cuddy Arena.
